Charles Sumner Centennial Celebration is held.

January 6, 1911

The city-wide event is sponsored by the Boston Branch NAACP and the National Equal Suffrage League, and other groups. Speakers include Henry Cabot Lodge, Gov. Winthrop Crane, and W.E.B. Du Bois. Flags are flown at half staff and schools ae closed. William Monroe Trotter describes it as “The smoothest two-day celebration ever managed by colored people in Boston.”
